2024 was the year I started oil painting, though my first attempt took place during a workshop with Kerry Dunn in November 2023. I was woefully underprepared but fortunate to receive a (free!) crash course in oil painting from a neighboring artist, Lyle Gertz, who teaches at Spring Studio.
This experience gave me the confidence I needed, and by February 2024, I began painting in the studio with Ricky Mujica at the Art Students League.
Initially I painted exclusively from life, but I started working on more master studies/sketches later in the year and it had a profound impact on my approach, particularly with color. I also started working from photo references, mostly in an attempt to maximize the quantity of work I'm doing.
